Whether it's affairs or corruption - princes and kings are always making headlines. On Tuesday, September 4, 2018, at 20.15:XNUMX p.m., "ZDFzeit" will report on royal missteps that are not a private matter in the documentary "Royal Scandals - Lies, Vices, Passions".
The Spanish royal family is currently struggling with a renewed affair involving former King Juan Carlos. Secretly recorded tapes have been made public in which Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, Juan Carlos' long-time friend, accuses the ex-monarch of laundering millions in taxpayers' money.
A large part of the public is still interested in juicy details from royal circles. This was shown again when Prince Harry married Meghan Markle in May 2018. For weeks beforehand, Meghan's father and half-siblings provided the press with details of the family feud - and almost spoiled the bride's big day.
The “ZDFzeit” documentary also recalls the “Queen Caroline scandal” in the 19th century, which severely affected the crown at the time: Caroline of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, who was of German descent, was married to the later King George IV.
When he became king, he wanted to get rid of his wife and sent word to her from faraway Italy that she should never set foot on English soil again. But Caroline, who was extremely popular with the people, returned to London, where she was subjected to a scandalous trial in which a large part of the population sided with the accused.
In the Netherlands, Máxima and Willem-Alexander have been enjoying increasing popularity for years. But this royal family also has a turbulent past: the marriage of Queen Juliana and the German Prince Bernhard, marked by affairs and intrigues, culminated in a state crisis in 1956 when the news became public that the queen was under the influence of a spiritual healer.
Der Spiegel revealed this unusual connection in a cover story, causing an earthquake in Dutch politics. A commission of inquiry investigated and banished the controversial Greet Hofmans from the court. And then the Prince Consort was also embroiled in a bribery scandal involving the American aircraft manufacturer Lockheed.
