Exemption from the broadcasting fee obligation for secondary residences

The contribution service of ARD, ZDF and Deutschlandradio is changing the exemption procedure for owners of secondary residences on November 1st. What is new is that spouses and registered life partners can also be exempted from the broadcasting fee obligation for secondary residences.

They can apply for an exemption if they live in a secondary residence in addition to their main residence. Until now, the exemption only applied to people who were registered with the Contribution Service with their main and secondary residence.

The facts:

From November 1, 2019, spouses and registered life partners can also apply for an exemption from the broadcasting fee obligation for their secondary residence. Previously, this was only possible for people who were also registered with the contribution service for their main residence.

The contribution service provides an online form on rundfunkbeitrag.de with which spouses or registered life partners can jointly submit an exemption application for their secondary residence.

The exemption for owners of secondary residences applies from the month of application or up to three months before that date, provided that the exemption requirements have been met during that time.
