Exhibition on the history of broadcasting in the Museum of Communication

It never went away, but it is currently experiencing a real renaissance - the radio. It provides reliable information, gives us structure and accompanies us through the day.

Especially in times of crisis, people are increasingly drawn to their receivers and give us the feeling that we are not alone with our fears and worries.

What seems normal today was a sensation 100 years ago. On December 22, 1920, Reichspost employees at the main radio station in Königs Wusterhausen near Berlin played a historic Christmas concert - the first public radio broadcast in Germany.

To mark the 100th anniversary, the exhibition “On Air. 100 Years of Radio” at the Museum of Communication Berlin from October 2, 2020 to August 29, 2021 will shed light on the successes, disruptions and futures of the world’s first electronic mass medium.

On a tour through 100 years of radio history in Germany, visitors encounter around 200 objects that tell the story of the technical foundations and beginnings of radio, its role during the Nazi era, and the reorganization in divided and then reunified Germany.

37 special radio exhibits are staged interactively – and presented by prominent radio and podcast voices such as Oliver Kalkofe and Katrin Müller-Hohenstein.

In the broadcast booth, guests create and present their own radio program or record a mix tape with their very own personal audio biography.

The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive range of educational activities and events, including a self-guided discovery tour for families.
