“Mary & George” – Sky brings incredible royal story

“Mary & George” is inspired by the incredible but true story of Mary Villiers, who led her beautiful and charismatic son George to seduce King James VI of Scotland and I of England – and become his all-powerful lover.

From humble beginnings, Mary and George's outrageous intrigues turned them into the king's most trusted advisers, making them the richest, highest-ranking and most influential players the English court had ever seen.

And this at a time when England's place on the world stage was threatened by a Spanish invasion and insurgents took to the streets to denounce the king.

With her steely political skills and ruthlessness, Mary shrank from nothing and no one.

She married her way to the top, bribed politicians, collaborated with criminals and made her way into the heart of the establishment, which she made her own.

Mary & George is a daring historical psychodrama about a ruthless mother and her son who scheme, seduce and kill to conquer the English court and King James' bed.

“Mary & George” is expected to be shown on Sky in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the UK, Ireland and Italy later this year.

The ensemble cast includes Nicola Walker, Niamh Algar, Trine Dyrholm, Sean Gilder, Adrian Rawlins, Mark O'Halloran, Laurie Davidson, Samuel Blenkin, Jacob McCarthy, Tom Victor, Alice Grant, Amelia Gething, Mirren Mack, Rina Mahoney and Simon Russell Beale.

Oliver Hermanus serves as main director alongside Alex Winckler and Florian Cossen.

The series was written by acclaimed playwright DC Moore and is inspired by Benjamin Wooley's non-fiction book "The King's Assassin."
