The start of filming for the crime thriller “Mordlichter”

Deep fjords and rugged cliffs, wild ocean and peaceful mountains characterize the Faroe Islands, the sparsely populated, autonomous archipelago between Scotland, Norway and Iceland.

Here, in the middle of the North Atlantic, a few days ago the first shot was taken on the stirring and twist-filled crime thriller “Mordlichter” (working title) with Odine Johne, Jan Krauter and Henning Baum in the leading roles.

Ute Wieland directs the whole thing based on a script by Christiane Dienger and Martin Sommer.

By chance, Johanna, a journalist from Hamburg, shortly after returning to her old homeland, is drawn into a mysterious murder case and quickly finds herself caught between the fronts of locals who cling to the centuries-old tradition of “Grindadráp”, the grind forest hunt, and anti-whaling activists who condemn the bloody slaughter of the Animals want to end.

In doing so, she also comes across a well-kept family secret that was previously unknown to her…

In addition to Odine Johne, Jan Krauter and Henning Baum, the German-Northern Irish cast in front of Eeva Fleig’s camera includes:

Patrick O'Kane, David Ganly, Patrick McBrearty, Rachael Rooney, Ash Rizi, Cailum Carragher, Anne Bird, Michael Patrick, Mukamajulé Michelo, Hayley-Marie Axe, Kasper Andreasen, Kelsea Knox, Rachel Murray and Ben Kerr.

Filming in Northern Ireland and the Faroe Islands will continue until October 24, 2023.

That's what it's about

Journalist Johanna (Odine Johne) returns to the Faroe Islands to sell her parents' house. Her mother died several years ago.

The 38-year-old has been mourning her father since she was a child. Johanna discovered the body of an animal rights activist from France on a rocky cliff.

A lance in his back draws suspicion to locals, against whose bloody hunt for pilot whales a group of activists is fighting.

For Johanna's childhood friend Bjørg (Jan Krauter), the island's police officer, murder investigations are completely new territory. But she believes she knows what is behind the crime.

The deeper Johanna delves into the case, the more she becomes aware that the solution to the case is closely linked to her own past and that she must allow traumatic memories to emerge.

“Mordlichter” is a production of Wasabi Film and Amalia Film in co-production with ARD Degeto for ARD, supported with funds from FFF Bayern and Northern Ireland Screen.
