Manuela Freitag is one of the most recognizable faces in Hamburg. Reeperbahn. For many years she has worked as a dominatrix on the legendary Herbertstrasse – longer than anyone else.

Her extraordinary life story is now the focus of a new ZDF documentary.

From abuse victim to sex worker

The three-part series "Herbertstrasse – The Story of a Dominatrix" traces a remarkable life story. Manuela Freitag grew up without her biological parents, living with foster families and in children's homes. She experienced abuse from an early age and fell into the clutches of unscrupulous pimps.

But instead of breaking down, she fought for her independence. She made her way to the famous Herbertstrasse and established herself there as a dominatrix. Despite social stigma, she managed to preserve her dignity and build a self-determined life.

A historical document of historical value

Director Peter Dörfler combines various narrative forms: Elaborate dramatic scenes, in which three actresses portray Manuela Freitag at different stages of her life, are complemented by archival footage and interviews. Friends and experts place her personal story within a broader social context.
