The extraordinary life of Lina Morgenstern as a biography

Berlin, 1874 – a time when women had few rights and were socially relegated to the private sphere. A journalistic magazine by women for women? Unthinkable for many men.

But Lina Morgenstern, writer, social activist, and women's rights activist, thought differently – and acted differently. With her vision of a well-founded, enlightening women's magazine, she defied all opposition.

She founded “Die Deutsche Hausfrauen-Zeitung”, which was published weekly for over three decades – financed by Publisher from their own savings.

Lina Morgenstern – way ahead of her time

In the new biography “Lina Morgenstern: The Story of a Rebel” (available everywhere from May 14, 2025 through Kremayr & Scheriau Verlag), author and director Gerhard J. Rekel dedicates himself to the impressive life of this extraordinary woman.

Rekel, known for her “Tatort” screenplays and award-winning non-fiction books such as “Monsieur Orient-Express,” paints a vivid portrait of an unwavering fighter for social justice.

Morgenstern (1830 – 1909) was not only active as a journalist: During the Austro-Prussian War in 1866, she spontaneously opened hospitals and soup kitchens for wounded soldiers – regardless of their origin or political background.

Her dedication saved thousands of lives. When her husband, Theodor, failed and the family with five children was left with nothing, she promptly wrote a bestseller. In doing so, she laid the foundation for a successful writing career.

Pioneer of the women's movement in Germany

In addition to her journalistic work, Lina Morgenstern founded numerous welfare organizations, organized the first International Women's Congress in Germany and consistently fought for women's education, equality and social reforms.

Her life’s work is a foundation for the first women’s and peace movement in Germany.

A book that gives courage

“Lina Morgenstern: The Story of a Rebel” is more than a biography – it is an inspiring testimony to female strength, determination and vision in a male-dominated society.

For readers interested in women's history, social politics, and social movements, this book is a must-read.
