The film “Vermiglio” has brought the village of the same name in Trentino, with a population of 2000, into the spotlight of the international film world.

Director Maura Delpero's drama achieved considerable success: not only did it win the Silver Lion in Venice, but it also made it into the final 15 candidates for the Oscar for Best International Film and was even among the top 5 Golden Globe nominees.

plot and background

Set in the final year of World War II, the film tells the story of an extended family in Vermiglio. The arrival of the wounded soldier Pietro disrupts the family's life. In the wintry mountain landscape, tensions develop between compassion and fear of reprisal.

Maura Delpero, whose father came from Vermiglio and whose grandfather was a village teacher there, also explores her own family history in "Vermiglio." Her deep connection to the region is reflected in the film's authenticity.

Local talent and filming locations

One of the main actresses, Martina Scrinzi, is herself from Trentino. She plays Lucia, the eldest daughter of the family. For her role, Scrinzi not only had to learn the local dialect but also practical skills such as milking cows.

Children from the village, such as Anna (11), Luis (9), and Enrico (6), also appeared in the film. For Anna, the experience was so inspiring that she is now pursuing a career as an actress.

Vermiglio as a film set

The village of Vermiglio, with its narrow streets and historic buildings, provides a picturesque backdrop for the film. A special filming location was the Santa Lucia Church in Comasine near Peio, which also appears in the film.

The breathtaking natural scenery of Val di Sole with snow-capped mountains, wild streams and endless forests gives the film an additional visual dimension.

"Vermiglio" will be shown in German cinemas from June 5, 2025. Film fans can look forward to a captivating family story set against the impressive backdrop of the Italian Alps…
