Podcasts are over – why fewer and fewer people are listening

Podcast growth is stalling. What was celebrated for years as the medium of the future now seems surprisingly outdated.
The reasons: oversupply, boredom and a target audience that has long since moved on. Hearing was yesterday – today, fast, visual and informative entertainment counts.

Burnout instead of boom
In recent years Podcasts sprang up like mushroomsEvery niche, every hobby, and every personality has its own audio format. The problem: too many formats and too little time. Most listeners have long since stopped keeping up with their playlists – and are thus falling behind.
In addition, many productions sound the same. Always the same voices, always the same interview questions, and always the same sound design. The once intimate feeling of listening to a real conversation has been replaced by interchangeability.
Other media
And in 2025, audiences want one thing above all else: content that delivers instantly. Instead of listening for 60 minutes, users are turning to short videos, snippets, or interactive formats. TikTok, Instagram Reel, YouTube Shorts quick-read articles in online magazines are the new stages. Audio alone is no longer enough to hold attention.
Young target groups in particular are increasingly eliminating podcasts from their media consumption. What matters to them is what they can see—and what they can understand in just a few seconds.
Range fizzles out
The hype has also cooled for brands and creators. Podcasts bring less reach, less engagement, and often no measurable results.
Anyone who wants to be successful today must think multimedia-wise: video, social content, online magazines, event presence – and not rely solely on voice.
Just somewhere else
Podcasts aren't disappearing completely, but they are losing their dominance. The medium has grown up—and with it, increasingly boring for the masses.
The future lies in formats that combine audio with images, community, interaction, and readability. Those who only speak today will no longer be heard tomorrow.
