MSC owner Aponte wants to invest in Hapag-Lloyd
World market leader explores entry into German rival: The founder and patron of the world's largest container shipping company MSC, Gianluigi Aponte (85), is apparently planning an entry into the German competitor Hapag-Lloyd.
According to "Manager Magazin", citing insiders, the Geneva-based entrepreneur has been sounding out the main owners of the Hamburg-based group for some time.
A spokesperson for Hapag-Lloyd declined to comment.
Shareholders' pact protects Hapag-Lloyd – but Aponte sees a weakness
Hapag-Lloyd is actually considered to be secured by a pact of the anchor shareholders: Logistics entrepreneur Klaus-Michael Kühne (89) and the Chilean shipping company CSAV each hold around 30 percent of the shares and are contractually obliged to maintain their investment.
However, Aponte seems to have identified a potential weakness on the Chilean side.
Should the Chileans put their stake in Hapag-Lloyd up for sale, according to this interpretation, the other major shareholders from Qatar and Saudi Arabia could also be willing to sell.
Apocalypse for competitors: Aponte systematically expands its empire
The Italian shipping company is currently pursuing an aggressive expansion strategy. In 2024, MSC acquired almost 50 percent of the Hamburg port authority HHLA, thereby securing significant access to the German container handling market.
Aponte recently rounded off its portfolio with the purchase of a fleet of oil tankers.
An investment in Hapag-Lloyd, the number five in the global container industry, would further expand MSC's already considerable market power and fundamentally shift the competitive landscape of the shipping industry.
