Tracing Light – Documentary about light

Thomas Riedelsheimer, a multi-award-winning documentary filmmaker, dedicates his latest work, “Tracing Light – The Magic of Light”, to one of the most fascinating phenomena of all: light.

The film combines breathtaking lighting effects with the findings of researchers and Artists and asks what light actually is, how it is created and how it becomes a medium for art.

3sat will broadcast the documentary on Monday, May 11, 2026, at 22:25 p.m. It will then be available in the media library from May 11 to August 9, 2026.

Science and Art – from Scotland to Erlangen

Riedelsheimer's journey takes him from the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, via the Advanced Research Centre of the University of Glasgow, to the Max Planck Institute in Erlangen.

Along the way, he brings together renowned scientists with artists, all of whom work with light in their own way.

The protagonists include:

◉ Daniele Faccio and his Extreme Light Group at the University of Glasgow.
◉ The artist duos Semiconductor and Brunner/Ritz.
◉ Pascal Del'Haye's team at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light.
◉ The land art artist Julie Brook.

Questions between super slow motion and quantum theory

The film focuses on fundamental physical questions: What lies behind wave-particle duality?

How do photons behave? And what does the cosmic microwave background radiation – an echo of the Big Bang – have to do with the static noise of old television sets?

Between laser football and quantum theory, “Tracing Light” delivers surprising answers that touch both science and art.

Opening film of DOK Leipzig 2024

“Tracing Light” celebrated its world premiere in 2024 as the opening film of Dok Leipzig, the renowned International Festival for Documentary and Animated Film.

It was a crowning achievement for a film that rekindled wonder at the nature of light…
