Why radio will remain indispensable in 2026

Since 2011, the special importance of radio has been celebrated every year on February 13th.

The medium is considered one of the oldest electronic means of communication – and yet it is more modern than ever.

A medium with a history and a future

World Day commemorates the founding of the United Nations Radio In 1946, the goal was to reach people worldwide, regardless of language, origin, or education. That's precisely what makes radio so special to this day: it's accessible, low-threshold, and unifying.

Whether in the car on the way to work, in the kitchen at breakfast, or via an app on a smartphone – radio accompanies many people's everyday lives. Despite streaming services and podcasts, it remains one of the most widely used media worldwide.

Why radio is still important

1. Information in times of crisis

In the event of natural disasters, power outages, or in crisis zones, radio is often the only functioning medium. It requires little infrastructure and reaches even remote regions.

2. Local proximity and community

Regional broadcasters report on local events, strengthen identity, and give local voices a platform. No global streaming service can replace this proximity.

3. Freedom of expression and perspectives

Radio usually offers platforms for different perspectives – it can therefore make an important contribution to democratic opinion formation.

4. Technological advancements

With digital radio (DAB+), internet radio, and podcasts, the medium has evolved. Tradition meets innovation – that's what makes radio flexible and future-proof.

Not just music

Radio is not just entertainment, but also education, culture, and information. Especially in times of social media and rapid news flows, it offers a curated, often journalistically vetted access to current topics.

World Radio Day demonstrates that radio is not obsolete. It connects generations, transcends borders, and remains a reliable companion in everyday life. While technologies change, the fundamental idea remains – reaching people through voice and sound.
