Bloatware alert this Christmas – how to properly set up new devices

Millions of smartphones and tablets end up under the Christmas tree this holiday season – but many devices don't operate at full capacity from the start. The reason is pre-installed software that blocks storage space and slows down performance.

Anyone who will be buying a new one in December smartphone, tablet or Laptop Those who unpack it often experience disappointment: Instead of the expected speed, the device seems sluggish.

This is often due to so-called bloatware – unwanted programs that manufacturers install directly from the factory.

What is bloatware and why is it problematic?

Bloatware refers to pre-installed software that users neither requested nor need. These programs not only take up valuable storage space, but can also shorten battery life, slow down the system, and create security vulnerabilities.

“Panda Security” is now drawing attention to the problem, especially during the Christmas season, when many new devices are put into operation.

The consequences of bloatware are manifold:

Pre-installed applications start automatically in the background and consume processor and memory. This reduces the available performance for programs that are actually needed.

At the same time, free storage space shrinks before users have even saved their own data.

Additionally, constantly running apps drain the battery. Furthermore, outdated or insecure software creates potential entry points for attacks or data misuse.

Families setting up tablets for children, or people receiving their first smartphone, can be slowed down by pre-installed software.

Four categories of bloatware

1. Test versions: Time-limited demo versions of programs that continue to consume system resources even after they expire.

2. Manufacturer applications: Additional tools that often duplicate existing operating system functions.

3. Provider software: Pre-installed services from the mobile network operator, which often remain without practical use.

4. Advertising software: The most aggressive option, featuring tracking functions, pop-ups, and potential privacy issues.

Identify and remove bloatware

Before cleaning up, users should check which apps are truly unnecessary. The following steps will help:

➡️ Review the list of pre-installed applications, check startup programs, and monitor RAM and processor usage. This will help identify duplicate functions.

➡️ Security software can help detect hidden or suspicious programs. A quick online search will show whether certain apps are considered risky.

◉ Windows: In Settings, under Apps, access the installed programs and uninstall any unknown software. You can also clean up the startup programs in the Task Manager.

◉ Android: Uninstall apps by pressing and holding them. If an app cannot be removed, it can be disabled in the settings.

◉ MacOS: In Finder, open the Applications folder, drag unwanted apps to the Trash, and then empty the Trash.

◉ iPhone / iPad: Delete apps via storage management in the settings or directly on the home screen.

Avoid bloatware

Paying attention when buying can minimize the problem. Devices should be purchased from trusted retailers.

When downloading apps, avoid freeware bundles and only obtain them from official app stores. Up-to-date security software and regular updates provide additional protection.

“Christmas is one of the most critical times when it comes to hidden bloatware. Many users expect a fast new device – instead, they often receive slowing-down or even risky software pre-installed. A quick check and the removal of unnecessary apps makes devices significantly faster and more secure,” explains Hervé Lambert, Global Consumer Operations Manager at Panda Security.

Long-term protection for the family

Removing pre-installed software is an important first step. Continuous monitoring is recommended for lasting protection.

Panda Dome Family, for example, offers real-time protection, detects unwanted programs, optimizes performance, and helps families set up new devices safely.

With the right measures, you can ensure that new tech gifts for Christmas reach their full potential – without hidden limitations and safety risks…
