ZDF will broadcast a two-part documentary on the hopes and goals of young Chinese people starting on January 7, 2026 – a generation that, according to the film, is taking different paths than their parents.
China's economic boom seems to be over. While the older generation benefited from upward mobility through hard work, young people today face a different reality.

The economy is faltering and jobs are scarce. But instead of despairing, the younger generation is redefining its dreams.
Insights into the lives of young Chinese people
ZDF correspondents Elisabeth Schmidt and Miriam Steimer spent a day and a night with young people for the documentary "The Chinese Dream – 24h Young China." The two-part series offers authentic insights into their daily lives, homes, and worldviews.
The first episode, "A Day with Paintboxers, Influencers, and Millionaires," and the second episode, "A Night with Rock Stars, Rebels, and Princesses," give the protagonists themselves a voice. Instead of reporting on them, the authors let the young people tell their own stories.
From state promise to self-realization
The so-called "Chinese Dream," promoted by the government, promised prosperity through hard work and rise to the top of the world. But this formula no longer works for many young people. They are searching for other values and ways of life.
A young woman puts it clearly: The dreams of her generation differ fundamentally from those of their parents. Personal fulfillment should no longer rest on the shoulders of the next generation, but be found in one's own life.
Between optimism and serenity
The statements of the young protagonists paint a diverse picture: While some firmly believe they can achieve anything they set their minds to, others admit to having no great ambitions. A sufficient income is enough for them to do what they enjoy.
Particularly telling is the statement of a young man who emphasizes that he does not want to become a "work machine" but rather an "interesting soul." This attitude marks a clear break with the lifestyle of the previous generation.
Broadcast dates and availability
The documentary will be available in the ZDF media library from Wednesday, January 7, 2026. The linear broadcasts will take place on January 7 and 8 at 22:15 p.m. on ZDF.
Both episodes are offered with subtitles. The series offers a rare and unvarnished look at a generation in transition…
