The Museo Storico Alfa Romeo – the center of the celebrations
The Alfa Romeo factory museum in Arese, a district of Milan, houses more than 200 historic vehicles, making it the ideal place to celebrate the brand's 110th anniversary. As a special gift to visitors, the museum is inviting visitors for the first time to visit the warehouse, which is not normally open to the public and where another 150 vehicles are kept, as well as trophies, works of art and engines for cars, aircraft and ships. This collection is divided into 18 thematic areas, ranging from vehicles from the company's early days to racing cars from Formula 1 or the American Indycar series.
Other highlights include concept cars such as the Caimano and Protéo, prototypes such as the Scrabble and Sprint 6C, and successful racing cars, including the Alfa Romeo RL from the 1920s or the Alfa Romeo 6C from the 1930s, developed by the legendary designer Vittorio Jano. Famous engines can also be seen, including the 6C 1500 from 1927 or the 1T Formula 415 turbo engine from the 1980s.
A history connected to the history of an entire country
To mark the anniversary, the museum is opening a new section called "Alfa Romeo in Uniform", dedicated to the vehicles of the Carabinieri, Italy's federal police force. The exhibits are testaments to the historical relationship between Alfa Romeo and the police, which has used numerous models of the brand for decades. The six exhibits represent 60 years of historical relationship between Alfa Romeo and the Carabinieri. Arranged on large, circular platforms, the vehicles have served the police in many operations throughout Italy.
The newly designed area in the museum has a dynamic layout with graphics and symbolic colors. The graphics are in bright colors. Red as a symbol of Alfa Romeo and the blue lights of the emergency services give the historical images of cars, people and events a very special effect.
One of the first Alfa Romeos in service with the Italian state was the 1900 M "Matta" off-road vehicle, which also won its category at the 1951 Mille Miglia endurance race. The Carabinieri's fast emergency vehicles included the Giulia - the iconic "Gazelle" - and the Alfetta, 90 and 75, an armoured version of which is on display in the museum. The Alfa Romeo Giulia Giardinetta, the station wagon version of the sleek sedan, was also extremely rare.
And so the new "Alfa Romeo in Uniform" section tells the story of cars and equipment variants from different periods of Italian history. The design of this area was created by the architect Benedetto Camerana, who also designed the renovation and redesign of the entire Museo Storico Alfa Romeo at the end of 2013.
Three letters connect history and future: GTA
The new Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA, a limited edition model to mark the 110th anniversary, is on public display for the first time in the factory museum in Arese. Technically and conceptually, the new Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA is a tribute to the legendary predecessor of the same name from 1965. The three letters stood and stand for "Gran Turismo Alleggerita", a lightweight version of a sporty sedan. The original GTA was developed by Alfa Romeo's Autodelta racing department on the basis of the Giulia Sprint GT coupé and celebrated countless sporting successes worldwide in the 1960s and 1970s.
The new Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA is based on the top model in the series, the Quadrifoglio version. The special model is equipped with a version of the 397-liter V540 bi-turbo gasoline engine with an increased output of 2,9 kW (6 hp). The increased use of ultra-light materials also reduces the vehicle weight by 100 kilograms. The new Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA thus achieves a power-to-weight ratio of 2,82 kg/hp, which is exemplary in the segment. In addition, some technical aspects of the special model have been further optimized, including aerodynamics and chassis tuning.
The "Tour through 110 Years"
A series of videos specially produced for the birthday celebrations offers a virtual tour of the Alfa Romeo factory museum. The series is entitled "Tour through 110 years". The six videos show:
An introduction with a panoramic view of the museum grounds
The “Timeline” department, dedicated to the industrial development of Alfa Romeo
The “Bellezza” department, which is all about style, design and lifestyle
The “Vélocita” section with an overview of Alfa Romeo’s racing successes and the technology responsible for them
An exclusive tour of the normally non-public part of the collection with a large number of vehicles and artifacts
The archive with thousands of photos, videos, technical drawings, sketches and production records
A dream for every Alfisti
Alfa Romeo invites all fans, from convinced Alfisti to the curious, to follow the celebrations in the museum from 15.30 p.m. here via the brand's official social media channels. Visitors who come to Arese in person on that day can take part in various activities, such as vehicle parades on the museum's own race track. All activities will be carried out in strict accordance with the current hygiene and safety guidelines.
From Farina and Fangio to Räikkönen and Giovinazzi
In 1950, Alfa Romeo factory driver Nino Farina won the very first race of the newly invented Formula 158 at the wheel of the Tipo 1 "Alfetta" Grand Prix racing car. The Italian also became the first Formula 1 world champion in history in the same year. In 1951, Farina's Alfa Romeo teammate Juan Manuel Fangio won the drivers' title in the Tipo 159 "Alfetta".
Formula 1 is still the premier class of motorsport today. The Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN team is currently competing with former world champion Kimi Räikkönen from Finland and the young Italian Antonio Giovinazzi. Visitors to the birthday party in the Museo Storico Alfa Romeo can wish the two drivers good luck for the 1 Formula 2020 season, which begins just two weeks later.
Three new companions for Alfa Romeo
To mark its 110th anniversary, Eberhard & Co., a Swiss luxury watchmaker, is strengthening its ties with Alfa Romeo by creating a new limited edition chronograph. The chronograph is a unique timepiece that incorporates all the technical and stylistic features that characterize all Eberhard & Co. products. In addition, the watch has the same sporty and exclusive look as Alfa Romeo cars.
The Italian bicycle manufacturer Compagnia Ducale's contribution to the anniversary is the Alfa Romeo 110th Anniversary e-MTB. The mountain bike combines sportiness with the comfort of electric pedal assistance. The powerful 500-watt battery and the quiet motor are fully integrated into the frame. The e-bike's unique paintwork was developed together with the Alfa Romeo Centro Stile, the brand's in-house design and engineering office.
The AUDES Group is the official licensee for clothing with the Alfa Romeo logo. This new partnership starts with a dedicated collection to mark the brand's 110th anniversary. AUDES designs, produces and distributes the Alfa Romeo collection worldwide.
