The versatile and dynamic Fiat Panda Cross was the key to the sales success of this range across Europe. The crossover look brought the Fiat Panda Cross closer to a new, younger customer base - buyers who are looking for a car that is not only functional and ideal for city traffic, but also particularly cool and with a modern design.
The same idea is behind the expansion of the Fiat Tipo range to include the Cross body variant. The designers and engineers have developed the new crossover variant of the Fiat Tipo to appeal to new target groups and to exploit the market opportunities in the UV segment. The Fiat Tipo is therefore more broadly positioned than ever before in terms of customer age, taste and mobility requirements.
The new design of the Fiat Tipo
The design of the Fiat Tipo has been completely refreshed in the new model year. It now looks even more modern, dynamic and elegant. The visual identifying feature on the front of the vehicle is the newly designed radiator grille with the new FIAT logo and lettering. After the new Fiat 500, the Fiat Tipo is the second model from the brand to adopt these new design elements.
The headlights and taillights of the Fiat Tipo have also been redesigned. With full LED lights, they not only enhance the overall appearance, but also provide a more modern look and increase active and passive safety thanks to improved visibility. In line with the pursuit of greater sustainability, the new headlights and taillights also consume less power. This relieves the load on the alternator and reduces consumption and CO2emissions. The lower part of the bumper is enhanced with elements that look like brushed chrome. New designs, including a diamond finish, are available for the 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels.
The interior of the Fiat Tipo also features numerous innovations in style and technology. A freely configurable instrument display as a 7" TFT color display (17,8 centimeters) screen diagonal replaces the analog instrument panel. The technically sophisticated and advanced system enables the control of important vehicle functions and data on the journey as well as displays for multimedia functions. In addition, the completely new 10,25" touchscreen display with navigation system (26 centimeters) screen diagonal is used to control the Uconnect infotainment system.TM 5. The Fiat Tipo will also receive this system as the second model series alongside the new Fiat 500.
The steering wheel is now even more elegant and sporty, while also being more compact and ergonomic. The view of the 7,0-inch monitor positioned behind it has been improved. The engineers also paid a lot of attention to the central control panel. The air conditioning controls have been revised and feature additional inserts in chrome and black.
In addition, the new metallic paint finish Flame Orange (exclusively available for City Cross and Cross) is available for the new Fiat Tipo, as well as the also new paint finish Ocean Blue.
The new Fiat Tipo Cross
The Fiat Tipo family is growing. The Fiat Tipo Cross complements the tried and tested body variants of 5-door, XNUMX-door sedan and station wagon. As a real crossover, the new Fiat Tipo Cross is aimed at a completely new target group. Many families, who were previously the regular customers of the Fiat Tipo, have changed their preferences. Conventional five-door cars and station wagons are no longer the optimum. Instead, they have moved closer to the world of crossovers. Today they expect a more emotional, distinctive, dynamic and younger car at an affordable price, without having to forego space and comfort.
Accordingly, the design of the new Fiat Tipo Cross is decidedly more powerful and bolder. The vehicle appears significantly wider, especially due to the redesigned grille, which extends below the headlights and is significantly higher. This is a typical crossover element.
The body of the new Fiat Tipo Cross is raised by almost four centimeters and appears more robust. This is due to a modified geometry of the wheel suspension and larger wheels. This solution can already be seen on another crossover from the brand, the Fiat 500X. These measures raise the seating position, which also makes getting in and out easier. Other actions that are important for families are also easier, such as putting children in the back seats or finding things that may have slipped under the seats.
The new Fiat Tipo Cross is almost seven centimeters larger than the Fiat Tipo. This is due to the new Cross details. These include fender flares and side skirts, an underbody guard, specific front and rear bumpers and a distinctive front bull bar, which gives the new Fiat Tipo Cross a particularly solid and muscular look.
security and technology
Along with the refreshed design, the new Fiat Tipo has received a comprehensive upgrade in terms of technological equipment. The new Tipo is equipped with a wide range of innovative driver assistance systems (Advance Driver Assistance Systems ADAS). These include:
- Traffic sign recognition: Informs the driver about any speed limits.
- Intelligent Speed Assistant: Recommends the driver to observe the speed limit.
- Lane Departure Warning: Warns the driver when leaving a lane clearly marked by lines on the road.
- Attention Assist: Recommends the driver to take a break if the system detects behavior that indicates fatigue.
- Adaptive high beam: Activates and deactivates the high beam depending on oncoming vehicles.
- Blind Spot Assistant: Uses ultrasonic sensors to monitor the area not visible in the exterior mirrors (“blind spot”) and warns of dangers with a triangular light in the exterior mirror.
In addition, the new Fiat Tipo is available with front parking sensors, keyless entry and engine start system (Keyless Entry/Go) and a new wireless smartphone charging pad.
The new Fiat Tipo is, alongside the new Fiat 500, the first vehicle of the brand to be equipped with the fifth generation UConnect 5 infotainment system. Designed for the connected services of the future, the system is operated via a 10,25-inch screen. To offer a simple and convenient user experience, UConnect 5 is based on the Android Auto* operating system. Uconnect 5 with Apple CarPlay* and Android Auto* allows the wireless use of CarPlay* functions on the radio touchscreen with customizable profiles. Up to five configurations can be saved.
Two phones can be connected to the infotainment system of the new Fiat Tipo simultaneously via Bluetooth® to use a company and a private cell phone in parallel, for example. Incoming and outgoing calls can be handled simultaneously without having to switch from one connection to the other to answer a call on the phone that is not currently connected. The new Fiat Tipo offers rear seat passengers their own USB port. This feature is particularly useful for families on long journeys, as children can, for example, power up their tablets.
Efficient and sustainable engines
The engine range of the new Fiat Tipo has been further optimized. At market launch, a petrol engine and a turbo diesel in two power levels are available.
The GSE 1.0 T3 petrol engine is a 74 kW (100 hp) three-cylinder engine from the FireFly engine family, which combines lower fuel consumption and emissions. The engine produces a maximum torque of 190 Newton meters at just 1.500 rpm. By comparison: the previous 1,4-liter petrol engine delivers this torque at 4.500 revolutions per minute. The new three-cylinder engine ensures great driving pleasure and offers optimal acceleration even at low engine speeds thanks to the advantageous torque curve. The gear ratio ensures optimal responsiveness in city traffic and high comfort on the motorway. At a cruising speed of 130 km/h, the engine speed is just 3.200 rpm.
An alternative is the Multijet turbodiesel, which meets the Euro 6D emissions standard and is available in two power variants: 1.3 70 kW (95 hp) and 1.6 96 kW (130 hp). Compared to the previous 88 kW (120 hp) turbodiesel, this represents an increase in power. The 1.6 Multijet with 96 kW (130 hp) is also an ideal engine for vehicle fleets, making the Fiat Tipo a strategically positioned vehicle in the C segment.
ProClean hygiene equipment package from Mopar®
On request, the Fiat Tipo series is available with the Mopar® developed ProClean equipment package is available, which effectively combats germs and pollutants in the interior. The ProClean package consists of three components. A particularly powerful filter in the fresh air supply prevents contaminants from outside from entering the car. It blocks particles and practically 100 percent of allergens, and also reduces the formation of mold and bacteria by 98 percent. An additional, electrically operated air purifier in the passenger compartment catches microparticles such as pollen or bacteria. And finally, a small lamp uses UV light to combat microorganisms on surfaces (e.g. steering wheel, gear stick, seats) while the vehicle is parked.
The Fiat Tipo – a success story
The Fiat Tipo celebrated its world premiere in 2016. After gradual expansion, the range now consists of four body variants: four-door sedan, 5-door, station wagon and cross. From the outset, the Fiat Tipo was one of the best-selling models in the segment in Italy and throughout Europe. With a 70 percent share in markets outside Italy, the Fiat Tipo contributes greatly to the brand's overall performance. A total of around 2016 Fiat Tipos have been sold since 670.000, with the series reaching its highest foreign share in 2019.
