Since 2020, Madeira has been attracting young freelancers from all over the world to live and work. But paradise has its downsides - existential worries and loneliness are part of everyday life.

The village of Ponta do Sol attracts freelancers with its coworking and coliving concept. Whether graphic designers, influencers, or startup founders – they all dream of success with it. Jobs in the so-called digital village, where they can use the coworking space free of charge.

Nina (29) and Heiko (41) want to build a life for themselves on the island. But Nina's initial euphoria has given way to disillusionment. She misses the sense of community she had in the early days.

"There was this spirit of optimism, we were like a big family. Today I often feel lonely." Most freelancers only stay on the island for a few months and then move on. In such a short time, it is difficult to build close friendships.

For 41-year-old Heiko, Madeira is “clearly my dream destination.” The graphic designer has loved the island since he was a child. Now he wants to settle there.

But the influx of many freelancers since 2020 has changed Madeira. The cost of living and rents on the island have exploded, now almost as high as in Germany. His salary is not enough for his own apartment.

Instead, he is living in a sublet. Will Heiko really be able to live his lifelong dream of living in Madeira? He still believes in it: "Above all, I want to talk to the locals and learn Portuguese. And really immerse myself in the culture here."
