Major fire in Duisburg – new episodes of "Feuer & Flamme"

Six new episodes of “Feuer & Flamme” provide a deep insight into the diverse daily work of Duisburg’s rescuers.

At the beginning of the new season, viewers will witness a major fire on a scrap island in Duisburg harbor.

For the first time, WDR accompanies the firefighters of the Duisburg professional fire department with the camera for “Fire & Flame”.

In the world's largest inland port, several hundred tons of scrap metal and junk vehicles are ablaze early in the morning. The cloud of smoke emanating from this fire is visible for miles around.

The Duisburg fire department immediately took all necessary measures to keep the huge fire under control. All neighboring towns sent reinforcements.

The fireboat of the Duisburg harbor guard also starts the extinguishing measures from the water.

Oliver Tittmann, head of the Duisburg fire department, says: “The Rhine and the large bodies of water bring with them a multitude of sometimes unpredictable operations.”

And further: "The harbor guard employees must therefore prepare themselves for adverse circumstances and challenging situations. In air rescue, everyone involved can apply their knowledge and skills at the highest level."

Camera teams accompanied the firefighters in the Ruhr area for 70 days, around the clock. Up to 40 special cameras - so-called bodycams - were in use, sometimes simultaneously.
