The new Abarth 695 70° Anniversario special edition is being presented today in Milan to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Abarth & C. brand and to commemorate the ingenuity of its founder Carlo Abarth (1908-1979), who was the first to recognise the potential of technologically upgrading production vehicles.

The new limited edition will be produced in a run of just 1949 units, in keeping with the year of its foundation, and is the most important of the tribute models presented during the anniversary year. The new limited edition is dedicated to lovers of the brand with the scorpion in its logo. This unique vehicle will be presented during Abarth Days 2019, Europe's largest gathering of Abarth enthusiasts. It will take place in the futuristic Milano Innovation District (MIND) until October 6th. The Abarth 695 70° Anniversario is an exciting surprise for the many participants who will gather in the new science, art and innovation park to celebrate the first 70 years of the automotive legend.

The new Abarth 695 70° Anniversario is equipped with the new "Spoiler ad Assetto Variabile" - this is the result of targeted work in the FCA wind tunnel in Orbassano (Turin). Abarth's engineers aimed to improve the aerodynamics of the car. The spoiler increases grip on different routes, thus ensuring more speed and greater stability at the limit. In a word: the feature increases performance potential. That is why the new "Spoiler ad Assetto Variabile" is also a tribute to the founder's concept. Carlo Abarth strove for maximum, permanently available performance. He strove for innovative, technical solutions. This constant research into the optimum possible in each case made him a pioneer and visionary in terms of the technical upgrading of road vehicles.

The new Abarth 695 70° Anniversario

The Abarth 695 70° Anniversario is intended for collectors as well as lovers of uncompromising performance and sportiness. It also impresses thanks to the new rear spoiler, which with its scorpion emblem makes a direct reference to the world of motorsport and Abarth's extremely successful racing history. The spoiler is manually adjustable, as in racing: In the pit, the mechanics can adjust the angle of the spoiler - and this also works with the 695 70° Anniversario: The "Spoiler ad Assetto Variabile" can be locked in 12 different positions, the inclination can be adjusted from 0° to 60°. In the maximum inclination position (60°), the spoiler increases the aerodynamic load by up to 200 kilograms at a speed of 42 km/h. This ensures excellent driving dynamics and more stable behavior at high speeds, especially on fast tracks with different surfaces.

This helps when driving through long curves, such as those on the Vallelunga Circuit: On the legendary Curvone, the driver can use the "Spoiler ad Assetto Variabile" to reduce the number of steering corrections by almost 40 percent. In order to achieve such a technical level on a permanent basis, the new Abarth 695 70° Anniversario was tested south of Turin, in the large FCA wind tunnel in Orbassano.

The centre was built in the 210s and has been constantly updated since then. The aim is to always use the latest technologies to achieve the maximum. The FCA wind tunnel is one of the few in Europe and the only one in Italy that allows comprehensive tests and high air speeds of up to 695 km/h. From the outset, the aim was to optimise the aerodynamics of each model by simulating the movement of the car in relation to the wind - in conditions as close to reality as possible. The "Spoiler ad Assetto Variabile" of the Abarth 70 XNUMX° Anniversario was also tested in this centre of excellence. Its properties were tested and consistently developed in all possible configurations and under the various trim, speed and yaw angle options.

The look of the new Abarth 695 70° Anniversario is also characterized by the fact that it incorporates some iconic styling elements from the past and present, such as the Record Monza active exhaust system, which provides the unmistakable sound. In addition, the new Monza 1958 green livery is a tribute to the color of the first 500 Abarths that set six international records in Monza 61 years ago. The many details in Campovolo Gray, including the "Spoiler ad Assetto Variabile", the body kit, the front and rear DAMs and the mirror caps, complete the "classic" sports package. Campovolo Gray is also used for the scorpion sticker on the bonnet and the checkered sticker on the roof. The 17-inch Supersport alloy wheels and the famous bright red Brembo brake callipers are also standard. The powerful Brembo brake system with four-piston aluminum brake calipers and 305 mm discs at the front and 240 mm discs at the rear ensure the best deceleration values ​​even at the limit.

The same sportiness is reflected in the cockpit: new, exclusive "Tricolore" seats by Sabelt were specially developed for this special edition. The brand's racing experience is also documented by the logos on the seats: in old-fashioned font and with a vintage emblem of the scorpion, the tradition of one of Italy's most famous brands is impressively documented.

In the cockpit there is a numbered plaque for each of the units produced in 1949, making each Abarth 695 70° Anniversario a true collector's item.

The new Abarth 695 70° Anniversario is equipped with the most powerful engine in the series. The 1,4-liter turbo engine delivers 132 kW (180 hp) and a torque of 3000 Nm at 250 revolutions per minute. The top speed is 225 km/h - with the spoiler at 0°. The car accelerates from a standstill to 6,7 km/h in just 100 seconds. In short: The Abarth 695 70° Anniversario is the perfect combination of engine power and aerodynamic performance.

For the sporty driver, connectivity is not lacking: Apple CarPlay* and Google Android Auto™* are standard features in the Uconnect™ 7-inch HD system, as are navigation and DAB radio. The infotainment system features an HD screen and Abarth Telemetry, an integrated performance measurement application. Automatic climate control, daytime running lights, LED fog lights, and special floor mats are also standard.

Tuning in the spirit of Carlo Abarth

Carlo Abarth was born in Vienna on November 15, 1908 and achieved unparalleled success in the world of motorsport. This was the result of a meticulous commitment to engine development and a truly astonishing talent. Scooters, bicycles, motorcycles with and without sidecars - the young man loved everything that could be driven. For him, the most important thing was to be able to dismantle the vehicles, repair them and improve their performance. At the tender age of eleven, Carlo Abarth wrapped a leather belt around the wheels of his scooter to reduce friction with the asphalt and beat the older children in the neighborhood in their competitions. Nine years later, he achieved his first successes with the Motor Thun team. His talent for racing and an innate sense of technology meant that as early as 1930, he produced his first motorcycle customized under his name.

Unfortunately, a serious accident in a race in Linz forced him to give up motorcycling. But Carlo Abarth did not lose his determination, he wanted to continue to push his own limits - and he continued to ride, but from now on with a sidecar. He made such a vehicle famous when he drove a 1934-kilometer race against the Orient Express in 1.300 and beat the famous train. This triumph marked a new beginning for Carlo Abarth. In 1945 he moved to Merano and became an Italian citizen. After a short employment at Cisitalia, on March 31, 1949, he founded Abarth & C together with racing driver Guido Scagliarini. Their first car was the 1100A, derived from the Fiat 204. The vehicle attracted particular attention on April 10, 1950, because the legendary Tazio Nuvolari drove his last race in Sicily with it - and won it. Since then, the sign of the scorpion has been continually winning victories and setting records, developing revolutionary tuning kits and legendary technology. For example, it was in 1962 when Carlo Abarth decided to drive the Abarth 1000 with the rear hood open to improve engine cooling. But he soon realised the aerodynamic consequences of this modification. So in 1966 he developed a real spoiler. He was one of the first to equip racing cars with rear spoilers to take advantage of the aerodynamic benefits. The new Abarth 695 70° Anniversario pays tribute to this innovation.

An exciting campaign video celebrates the genius of Carlo Abarth

The launch of the new Abarth 695 70° Anniversario is accompanied by a communication campaign by Independent Ideas. The striking video celebrates Abarth's 70th anniversary by retelling the founder's extraordinary life and connecting it to the present day. Viewers are drawn in by a fast-paced sequence of images that illustrate Carlo Abarth's three famous exploits - and these are linked to the brand's values ​​to this day. This is what the film represents with the vehicles that will be enhanced with the scorpion logo in the anniversary year.

The video begins with the budding genius Carlo, who modified his scooter in 1918 to win his first races on the streets of Vienna. The same search for performance can be found in the new 595 Pista, an exceptional model equipped with the new Record Monza exhaust system with active valve - and in which the Koni rear suspension with FSD technology ensures excellent roadholding, optimal handling and increased safety.

The image changes and the audience is sent back to 1934. At that time, the ambitious young man made headlines by conquering the Orient Express on the route from Ostend to Vienna with a motorcycle and sidecar. The connection to the here and now is made with an exciting perspective of the Abarth 595 esseesse. This current special edition clearly reflects the founder's attitude: the name "esseesse" refers to Carlo Abarth's famous tuning kit from the sixties.

Another leap in time - and the viewer finds himself in Carlos Abarth's garage. The year is 1962, and the Abarth 1000 is winning practically everywhere. The car crosses the finish line with the legendary open tailgate. This allows Abarth to dissipate the engine heat and has a positive effect on the aerodynamics. It is actually one of the first rear spoilers in racing, which - derived from the open tailgate - is used in 1966. The scene changes again and we see a fast-driving Abarth 695 70° Anniversario with the rear spoiler raised. This special edition is the latest homage to the legacy. And like all vehicles currently built under the sign of the scorpion, it carries on the spirit of the founder using the most modern means.

The film, directed by Alessio Fava for the Haibun Production Company, ends with the new slogan “Let's play forever”, which further underlines the timeless, sporty spirit of the brand in this anniversary year.
