Classic car magazine “Motor Klassik” celebrates its 40th anniversary

On July 27, 1984, the first issue of “Motor Klassik”, a classic car magazine published by “Motor Presse Stuttgart”, was published.

The launch of the magazine was so significant at the time that even “Der Spiegel” reported on it.

The debut took place shortly afterwards at the 12th Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, where the magazine was presented to the scene.

Of the 75.000 printed copies, over 50.000 were sold. The idea for the magazine came back in 1979 from Dirk-Michael Conradt, a young editor at “Auto Motor und Sport”.

At that time, there were already successful classical music magazines in England, while there was no comparable magazine in Germany.

The founder of “Motor Presse”, Paul Pietsch, recognized the potential and gave the green light for the founding of “Motor Klassik” with his decisive “Let’s do it now!”

The magazine has been published monthly since 1985 and reports on classic cars, races, rallies, trade fairs and markets. There are also travel reports, portraits, service stories and detailed buying advice.

“We report twelve times a year from the world of classic automobiles and offer plenty of driving reports,” explains Hans-Jörg Götzl, editor-in-chief of “Motor Klassik”.

In addition, the sister magazine “Youngtimer” has been running for 21 years, which focuses on future classics and is published eight times a year.

In addition, the editorial team publishes several special issues every year, including buying guides and repair instructions, and is active on digital channels.

In order to offer readers practical experience, the editorial team also organizes rallies and reader races as well as special driving training for classic cars.

Since 1984, “Motor Klassik” has developed from a monthly rust review into a small universe that focuses on the love of classic automobiles.

The anniversary edition of “Motor Klassik” 9/2024 (in the photo above) is now available in stores and as an e-paper.
